How much does it cost to install pinnable acoustic fabric in my classroom?

Acoustic fabric is becoming an increasingly popular wall covering in classrooms, staffrooms and school offices.  The large range of colour choices, along with the functionality of these fabrics makes it a great choice for a huge number of applications.

We commonly get asked, “How much does it cost?”

The short answer is: It depends on a number of factors.  However, we will attempt to answer that question below.

As an example, if you want to cover the back wall of your classroom, say 6 metres wide by 2.4 metres high, and if your wall is ordinary plasterboard, you can do one of two things:
  1. Buy and install self-adhesive 600 x 600mm acoustic tiles. These are very simple to install for a person with even the most basic DIY skills. You will need 40 tiles (10 tiles long x 4 tiles high) to cover this area.   An approximate cost for this is $1900 + GST.  The world is your oyster when it comes to colours and designs with these tiles. Depending on where you start and stop the fabric tiles, aluminum edging may be required, however this is not an expensive addition.
  2. Buy sheet acoustic fabric and get it professionally installed. It is available to purchase by the metre, and commonly 1200mm wide. Roll lengths up to 25 metres. 6 vertical drops, 2.4 metres high will be approximately $2900 + GST installed.  Once again, depending on where you start and stop the fabric, aluminum edging may be required.
  3. If you want to do more than one wall, it is not simply a case of multiplying the above estimate, as some components such as travel may already be allowed for, so if you do more walls, the price per square metre can be reduced.
General information:

The fabric can be cut around light switches and power outlets.  A heavy duty retractable knife is the best tool for this. Depending on your selected brand of product, the fabrics are compatible with push pins and Velcro. This means items like posters, notices, and student artwork  can be mounted on the wall and removed without damage.  It overcomes the issue of pin holes in the wall, or Blu-Tack or sticky tape residue remaining.

PLEASE NOTE:  If you are about to do some painting, do not paint the walls that are to have acoustic fabric installed, as the fabric adhesive will not adhere well to the fresh paint.
